If you could install a mind link with another person, such that all thoughts, feelings, senses and movements were fully telepathically shared, allowing the minds to operate effectively as one hive mind, would you do it?

Q: Would it have to be permanent?
A: No, but expect the brains to wire together over time, so as time goes on removing the link would become increasingly uncomfortable and eventually impractical
Q: What about multiple people?
A: Three or more people may also form a hive mind. Though given that the mind link has to be full mesh, the bandwidth costs scale quadratically with the number of bodies
Q: How does this work with physical distance?
A: Assume magic instant information teleportation for now. But if the link's bandwidth was antiproportional to distance, and thus eventually limiting the maximum comfortable distance betweenyour bodies, would you still do it?
Q: Is the installation procedure safe?
A: Let's assume yes. If brain surgeries are too risky for you, would you be willing to sacrifice some other part of your body to repurpose the nerves for bandwidth purposes?
Now I'm curious how openness towards mind linking correlates with plurality

@piegames
i once read Starters and was really intrigued by the body/mind swap. at least if it would not be in such an dystopian world and misused as it is in this (and the following) book.
this feels like one of those "there were no signs" moments. would have probably just "pressed the button" if something like that would have been available back then.
@piegames does this mind link collect my data or is it e2e?
@piegames would individuals who are linked like this ever feel alone (assuming the link doesn't stop working)?
@nspace well given that it us possible to feel alone amidst the closest of people, and even plural people certainly have the ability to feel very alone, I'd assume this possibility. Though extrapolating from plurality, the loneliness might be of a different and lesser kind
@piegames I can't really speak about plurality but I think that being mentally linked with someone and sharing a consciousness is closer than two individuals could ever be.
Either way I like the concept, as someone who struggles with reading and understanding others I find the idea of shared consciousness appealing in some way :3
@piegames I'm not interested, since
a) the sensory input of two people sounds overwhelming even if the load somehow can be shared between two people
b) I feel like I would lose the inability to completely focus on one thing since there'd always be signals from the other person. So I couldn't, play music, read, do math, or fence the way I currently do and like to do
@tessaK9 a) is true, you have double the sensory matched with double the brain, and how that balances out in the end is very unclear to me. b) OTOH play music together on a whole new level, or do math with double the thinking. Fencing would probably lead to very unfair two-on-ones, unless you'd find another hive to do cursed 2v2s with ^^
@piegames To be fair, the idea of playing together with someone in complete synchronicity sounds extremely alluring, but something one can somewhat experience without a mindlink, at least to a level I haven't yet experienced. The fencing and the math part though: These are experiences that are in a large part wholly unique to myself and either I would drag whoever I'm linked with along or, if all my years of experience, studying and muscle memory, are immediately transferred to everyone else that is linked, I would lose myself completely. What is me would in some sense cease to be.
@tessaK9 yes. Losing yourself to form a new whole ultimately is the point of a hive mind
@piegames also what you're describing definitely seems to go further than just sharing all thoughts, feelings, senses and movements. thoughts without a context tend to lose all meaning fast. does the pain one person experiences near constantly suddenly cripple everyone they are linked to? will the noise of thoughts in foreign languages completely overwhelm you? will the precise movements that have been studied by one seem arbitrary to another? this hypothetical seems like such a radically different form of being, that it might just be: will you die, so that something "better" can live?
@tessaK9 yes, the implications go deep, and the answers to those questions imply a price probably few people are willing to pay. If you call this dying or not is up to you, but what I want to stress is that this is a slow transformation taking place at the speed of the brain's plasticity. People don't become one at once when linked, minds growing together is a process not too dissimilar to grafting
@piegames @tessaK9 if you imagine the other one to be just there and cheer you on or “watch” an encourage you as a kind of secondary internal monologue i would be very intrigued to share. You would really understand how much joy the other person feels doing their thing and that sounds wonderful to me.
@piegames I'm sure people into dronification kink will be perfectly normal about this poll
@Soblow one may think so, though the current poll results don't reflect this. Though to be fair the scenario is deliberately set up to provoke some deep questions, that go way further than typical kinks do, and also deliberately sidesteps most of the "assimilation" or "ego death" kinks
@piegames Oh, I might have voted before asking such questions tbh.
I supposed that the "give it a try" implies that some external mechanism would allow extracting one individual from said hivemind after a pre-set timeframe. In such conditions, I would be interested in trying. I've always been curious of how others work.
And for the plural aspects, eh, complicated, we simplified stuff.
@piegames no but only because realistically such a thing will be produced by a public company run by out of touch fascists who would be extremely eager to make this sort of thing 99% a tracking device for catching thought crimes and serving you mental ads and 1% what they actually say it is
@piegames
thing is im a psychosocial hazard and my mind comes with tons of hazards too
if i linked id feel psychologically infectious lol, so, id never except under very specific arguably safe circumstances
Why does it have to be way too hot to be gay with creatures? I just want to be gay properly...

I tried giving NextCloud AIO another go and was very quickly reminded of why i didn't use it before. It's quite opinionated on how it wants to be used, and any attempts to do something different seems to be met with an error message telling you off. Like, for example, I wanted to set it up with a CloudFlare tunnel, but it immediately complained about the URL not having a public IP address. I tried reading the docs, which said there was a way of doing that. But idk if it was my ADHD kicking my ass, but I couldn't for the life of me find where in their documentation how to tell it that I was setting it up like that. The only documentation I could find on their github wiki implied it would Tbh I would prefer it if there was a way to do it with kubernetes, but ig not many people use it for self-hosting things like I do...
this one also had some problems with nextcloud aio being too opinionated, so it switched to useing nextcloud without the aio config and creating its own config :3@astreaprtcl@c-6.dev mrrp I did that for my previous NextCloud install on docker. But i had issues getting some of the optional stuff for it working (like the collabora editor for example). I might give it another go at some point
@astreaprtcl@c-6.dev Mrrrrp that would be really helpful, thank you ^w^
as an individual developer, how much would you pay per month for a Forgejo Actions compatible CI service (Codeberg or your own forge) that offers VM-based isolation and non-Linux runners (BSD, macOS, Windows), as well as real human support?
please select an answer that describes how much you feel would be fair to pay to cover your needs, whichever those currently are. assume there is a pricing plan that perfectly fits your usage.
please boost!

no thoughts in that brain anymore
I dont like the term “digital sovereignty” because of the pronounced nationalist and authoritarian connotations that it carries, regardless of what the actual intentions of its particular users are.
I propose that as hackers, we reframe the core concept (independence of US-centric cloud operators) as “digital autonomy”. I think this carries the same core idea while being less about who rules the digital realm, and more about the freedoms we all have within it.
@jaseg I don't like the term "digital autonomy" cause as a german speaker, that sounds too car centric!
I would instead propose the term "zugnomy" or "trainomy"!
@littlerao @jaseg This is where I wish I had learned Ancient Greek. Sidero-what-nomy?
Happy #PrideMonth ! I drew some #Poly #Yuri .
@ExpiredPopsicle very nice!
and also reminds me that I need to add more poly flags to VGAPride, I've only got the right two
@foone
VGAPride has gotta be the most actively developed dos program I've ever seen and I love it
